The Boy Scouts of America filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection early Tuesday as the organization faces 275 abuse lawsuits and potentially an additional 1,400 cases to come.
Having already paid more than $150 million in settlements and legal costs between 2017 and 2019, the Boy Scouts hopes to contain the financial damage of the abuse scandal and emerge as a more sustainable organization.
Los Angeles Times reports:
The Boy Scouts of America, one of the nation’s oldest and largest youth organizations, filed for bankruptcy protection late Monday as former Scouts’ legal claims of past sexual abuse continue to mount.
The Scouts’ Chapter 11 petition, filed in Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, comes amid declining membership and a wave of new sex-abuse lawsuits after several states, including California, New York and New Jersey, recently expanded legal options for childhood victims to sue.
For decades the Boy Scouts knew about and tried to cover-up an epidemic of sexual abuse within the organization, even going so far as keeping a secret record, known as the “Perversion Files,” of Scout leaders suspected of raping and sexually abusing children, records that were never turned over to authorities for prosecution.
And yet while the Boy Scouts actively protected pedophiles, they promoted conservative Christian values, even going so far as to deny atheists and the children of atheists the chance to participate in the program.
In fact, the organization banned atheists, agnostics, and other freethinkers from joining because they require members to recognize an “obligation to God.” Indeed, in order to join the Boy Scouts, scouts and their families must pass a religious litmus test, and must sign a “Declaration of Religious Principles.” The declaration states, in part:
The Boy Scouts of America maintain that no member can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing his obligation to God.
Article IX. Policies And Definitions (Policies)—Charter And Bylaws
Clause 1. The Boy Scouts of America maintains that no member can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God. In the first part of the Scout Oath or Promise the member declares, ‘‘On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law.’’ The recognition of God as the ruling and leading power in the universe and the grateful acknowledgment of His favors and blessings are necessary to the best type of citizenship and are wholesome precepts in the education of the growing members…
And while the Boy Scouts demanded that each member recognize their “obligation to God,” they protected and enabled pedophiles, allowing them to prey on the children.
Can you smell the hypocrisy and moral corruption?
Bottom line: After banning atheists but protecting pedophiles the Boy Scouts Of America has filed for bankruptcy.
